Ever see a donk stopped at a stoplight, only to marvel at how its wheels are still spinning somehow? Spinning wheels, also known as “spinning rims,” are a highly popular alternative to the usual static donk wheels. As their namesake shows, spinning wheels feature an independent cover and heavy-duty roller bearings that allow it to rotate even while the vehicle is stopped.

The history of spinning wheels is just as fascinating as the wheels themselves. The following shows how spinning wheels evolved from their spinner cap predecessors to the bold and beautiful creations commonly seen today.

From Spinner Caps to Spinning Wheels

Before there were spinning wheels, spinner caps were the eye-catching automotive novelty of their day. While older “knock-off” spinner wheels were fixed in place, later wheels featured floating hubs that allowed logos and images to remain right-side up as the wheel spun around.

The modern spinning wheel was developed during the late 1980s by inventor and entrepreneur J.D. Gragg, who would go on to receive the first U.S. patent for spinning wheels by the early 1990s. Gragg’s “Tru-Spinners” spinning wheels were initially produced in very small quantities for custom and concept cars. However, other wheel manufacturers would eventually copy and capitalize on Gragg’s designs.

“Sprewell Spinners” and the Start of a New Trend

Although spinning wheels grew in popularity, it wasn’t until they were showcased by NBA player Latrell Sprewell on a fateful early 2001 episode of MTV’s “Cribs” that the unique wheel design really took off. Despite being marketed through Davin Wheels at the time, those flashy spinners were known afterwards as “Sprewell spinners” or “Sprewells,” for short.

Sprewell’s promotion of spinning wheels sparked a trend among donk owners throughout the 2000s. If you had a clean donk, then you had to have a clean set of spinners to match. Despite the trend slowing down towards the 2010s, these wheels remain popular with donk owners in search of that special something that sets their rides apart from the rest of the pack.

Warm weather brings with it the season of cruising down the strip with all your friends. Of course when you're rolling out in style, you'll want your donk to look its very best. Those 28-inch wheels won't polish themselves, and even if your spinners are shining bright, you won't want to leave your paint job in the dust. We've got some tips for bringing out the pearlized undertones and keeping your tires and vinyl looking their most awesome.

 1. Begin With Your Wheels: Remove the brake dust covers and spray down your wheels with a high-pressure nozzle before washing the rest of the car. If you leave polishing the wheels until the end, loose brake dust can be cast back onto your clean paint job. Take a soft but durable cloth and wipe down each wheel, removing loose grime and dust. Spray on an appropriate aluminum cleaner--you must first know if your wheels have a protective film over the aluminum. If they have no film, you can use a more abrasive polish. Otherwise, you will want to use a product like SONAX wheel cleaner or P21S Gel Wheel cleaner. Scrub down the wheel, including the lug nuts and bolts, with a soft bristled brush. Don't use wire, it will only scratch the finish. Use a chamois to dry without leaving spots.

 2. Headlights and Tail Lamps are Next: Like your wheels, the frame of your headlights are great for hiding dust and dirt. After washing off surface grime with a narrow nozzle, sponge, and car cleaner, apply acrylic polish to the lenses help bring back that bright look of a new car. Don't forget to pay attention to any chrome surrounds. Look for small painting sponges that have pointed ends to help you get in tiny creases.

 3. Open Your Doors: The dirt that builds up and is trapped on your running boards and around the edges can be visible from the outside if you don't remove it from the interior. Good old soap and water with elbow grease will get out all the sand and gravel that collects in those crannies. Bring a vacuum cleaner out to the car and suck up the loose stuff before you wet it down and potentially end up scrubbing it into your paint.

 4. Leave No Streaks on the Windshield: While a good glass cleaner is going to get all the grime off the glass of your windows, mirrors, and windshield, somehow almost every cloth will leave behind lint and streaks. Dry the window using newspaper and you'll see a brilliant spot and streak free finish.

Of course, brake dust covers help to prevent the dirt from accumulating on your wheels in the first place. Check out our full line of accessories at our website.

<![CDATA[Updating Headlights and Tail Lamps on a Classic Donk: What's the Right Thing to Do?]]>https://liftabrand.com/About/Blog/entryid/21/updating-headlights-and-tail-lamps-on-a-classic-donk-whats-the-right-thing-to-doWhile the long, muscular lines of the classic 70's machine that is the heart of your customized donk still look as awesome as ever, there are times when you might wonder if the 40 year old technology that Detroit built is really all you want or need. Those old headlights never provided the same illumination that modern vehicles dish out, and it's possible that your tail lights are barely visible. However, do you really want to replace the entire lens with an aftermarket unit featuring LED or HID technology that fits in the grille, but perhaps doesn't truly belong to that earlier decade?

While the long, muscular lines of the classic 70's machine that is the heart of your customized donk still look as awesome as ever, there are times when you might wonder if the 40 year old technology that Detroit built is really all you want or need.

Is This a Show Car or a Daily Driver?

When you began customizing your donk, did you intend that it simply become a jacked car straight out of another decade destined to be displayed at car shows, neighborhood meets and as an attraction for your business? Or do you see your ride as your own vision that you take to the corner store and beach? The answer to those questions may determine what you decide to do with your headlights. If you are not adhering to a design spec from another century, install a set of lights and accessories that add to the personality of your machine while lighting up the night sky in style. Add on some LED halos, look into the silver-lights, and even add a set of driving lights in your lower grille. Go ahead!

New Throwback Products Can Do Both

If your donk has sealed beam headlights, there are new kits that allow you to rewire the socket for the bulb that will support HID, LED and even halo lights. Some arrive with lenses that duplicate the OEM appearance of your vehicle when it first rolled off the lot. In other words, under the summer sun it'll look stock. When the stars come out, you will be able to see down dark country roads with a pair of modern HID lamps in your grille.

If you're thinking about switching things up on your donk, check out our website for accessories and custom kits that can bring your 70's machine in the 21st century with style and flair. If you're not sure what you're looking for, give us a call and we'll be glad to help.

Ready to get your donk on? Installing a lift kit for your donk, whether it’s your first time or if you’re seasoned, requires a knowledge of what to do and what not to do. The following offers a brief primer on the do’s and don’ts when it comes to your new lift kit:

Do’s:

 • Get the right kit for your vehicle. There are different donk kits that are specifically tailored to broad array of vehicles, usually to accommodate differences in suspension design and handling capability. Find the wheel kit that offers the closest compatibility for your vehicle. If you can’t a pre-made kit for your donk, then you may need to have a custom donk kit created and installed for your ride.
 • Upgrade your brakes. When you fit your ride with a taller suspension and bigger wheels, you’ll also need plenty of stopping power to compensate for these changes. Make the switch to bigger, more powerful brakes when installing your lift kit. You’ll thank yourself later if you ever have to make a panic stop in the future.
 • Change your driving style accordingly. Keep in mind that your donked-out ride will handle quite differently from how it used to back when it was stock. With a higher center of gravity and other various suspension changes, you won’t be able to tackle those corners as quickly as before. Fortunately, donks are built with cruising in mind, not racing.

Don’ts:

 • Don’t put price over quality. Your donk’s lift kit might not be a cost-no-object type of deal, but you shouldn’t choose a lift kit based solely on price. Cheapening out on various lift kit components can eventually spell disaster for your donk, whether it’s a premature failure that happens months down the road or a poor ride caused by cheap components.
 • Don’t take shortcuts or cut corners. Taking shortcuts with your build could easily put you and your vehicle’s safety at risk. Avoid the temptation to substitute good parts for cheaper alternatives and don’t skimp out on fasteners for important structural components.
 • Don’t forget to add brake dust covers. The last thing you want is for your wheels to be ruined by brake dust. When installing your lift kit, don’t forget to protect your wheels with a set of custom-made brake dust covers.
